Does Cabbage Leaves Heal A Sprained Ankle Faster?

Sprained ankles are so common! You can simply step off a curb and…bam…your ankle is twisted!
My husband loves soccer and every Monday evening he meets up with the boys to practice on his favorite hobby. But soccer also means accidents and if you take the wrong turn, you may end up with a bone fracture.

Well, my husband didn’t break his bones instead he came home this Monday with a sprained ankle. His foot was swollen, bruised and painful and we both had a rough night – he was in pain and I was trying to ease his pain.

Fortunately, I know how to handle a sprained ankle with natural remedies and to fasten the healing process. I learned all this natural healing secrets from my grandma. I also remember how she used all sort of natural ointments and plant leaves to heal our childhood wounds and bruises.

For instance, you can use cabbage leaves to heal a sprained ankle and to get rid of its painful symptoms. However, you should first visit a physical therapist in order to dispel other complications such as broke bones or ligaments.

Steps I used to reduce swelling and pain of a sprained ankle:

The first thing I did was to place a bag of frozen peas on my husband’s ankle. Ice will help reduce swelling and pain.
During this time, I’ve prepared cabbage ankle wraps as it follows:

  • Remove the outer leaves from a cabbage.
  • Use a rolling pin to gently bruise the leaves so the juices can be released.
  • Wrap the cabbage leaves in foil and then warm them in the oven. The leaves should be warm but not hot.
  • Put the warm cabbage leaves over the painful area. Secure them in place with a gauze bandage.
  • Cover the entire area with plastic wrap to retain its warmth.
  • Leave it on for half an hour.
  • Follow this remedy twice daily for two days.

So, I changed the cabbage leaves until my husband fell asleep. The next day we went to visit the physical therapist and he recommended the R.I.C.E. therapy along with the cabbage ankle wraps which I alternated with onion ankle wraps:

  • Chop one large onion into small pieces. Put the pieces in a muslin cloth and tie it with a rubber band. Place the muslin cloth on the sprained area for at least two hours. If needed, secure the cloth with tape. Repeat as needed to reduce symptoms.
  • Alternatively, chill an onion in the refrigerator for two hours. Cut the onion into small pieces and then mix them with a good amount of salt. Apply the mixture to the swollen ankle and wrap it with an elastic bandage. Replace the compress with a new one every seven to eight hours. Do this for one to two days depending upon your recovery rate.
